Seniors group writes over 100 letters for us
A Salvation Army seniors group has written more than a hundred letters for us - with more on their way!
Gateshead Salvation Army Seniors Group meets every Wednesday, where they take part in activities, meet friends and enjoy lunch together. They decided to take on a project to help others - choosing to write for our Donate A Letter programme, which is wonderful.
Ann Humes, Community Lead at the Gateshead branch, said: “We have sent 116 letters so far and will continue to write them. The idea is to give some pleasure to people going through cancer treatment and remind them that there are people out there thinking of them.
“A lot of our members will have been through cancer themselves or had friends and family affected by it, so it’s something that is close to our hearts. We want to try and bring some comfort and joy to recipients at a time when that might be lacking.
“The letters range in content from heartfelt to amusing, drawing on our group’s own memories and experiences. It’s not only helping the recipients, but our group who are experiencing the joy of letter writing. The aim of our Seniors Group is to foster connection and reduce loneliness and isolation by bringing people together each week. From Me to You has the same aims, so we were really pleased to be able to support them with this project.”
If you are part of a local group and would like to get together to do something similar for us, we can help with support and resources. And please know that every letter received makes a huge difference to our work because it means one less person has to face cancer alone.
We have lots of information right here on our website to get you started, or you can register for our Donate A Letter programme and get everything you need to get going emailed across to you.
All cards and letters need to be sent to our PO Box address, below. Please include your name and email address on a post-it note with your letter(s) so that we can thank you.
One of our letter writers has created this wonderfully helpful video to talk through the process of getting your letters to us. Click on the image below (or here) to access the video on You Tube.
And most importantly, on behalf of everyone who will benefit from you getting involved in our work, THANK YOU for writing for us. Without you and your letters, we wouldn’t be able to brighten the lives of the 10,000+ cancer patients that we reach every year. Because of you writing for us, no-one has to face cancer alone.
