The last few months have been tricky for everyone and very much so for cancer patients, so it has been very important that we could maintain our service through lockdown, despite difficulties in collecting and distributing letters and reduction in staff and volunteer hours. Our Donate A Letter scheme saw a great increase in demand, but thanks to your support we have been able to keep this going.

Here are some of our lockdown highlights:

  • Experienced an increase in the demand for letters, despite some outlets not being able to reach patients. We delivered 1822 letters to cancer patients during the 3 month UK lockdown.

  • Signed up 164 new writers to our Donate A Letter scheme to help deal with demand.

  • When it was impossible and unsafe to process our letters in the usual way, writers emailed photographs of thie handwritten letters, which we printed off & delivered.

  • 25% increase in people requesting letters directly.

  • Supported 8 Duke of Edinburgh students to write letters as part of their volunteer module as other voluntary activities were suspended.

  • Forced to suspend our own event-based fundraising and workshops

  • Temporarily tailored our social media campaign to encourage people to write letters to anyone isolated. We posted daily writing prompts, held a Family Letter Writing Challenge and promoted a spring letter writing competition, supported by Royal Mail.

  • Supported online workshops given by some of our dedicated writers.

  • Invited by 8 radio stations to discuss lockdown letter writing and were featured in local newspapers and magazines

  • Raised funds with our Ten For Ten Challenge – with the help of other fundraisers we have raised over £6,500 so far.

  • Temporarily suspended discussions with 2 prospective outlets but now have 4 more in the pipeline.

  • 2 of our outlets couldn’t deliver letters through lockdown but are now back up and running. Other outlets needed more letters than normal through lockdown.

  • Finalists for the Charity Today Awards for Charity Partnership of the Year with The Lewis Foundation

And as ever we:

  • Stuck on 100’s and 100’s of stamps to letters and writing packs

  • Read thousands of the most wonderful letters

  • Tackled the loneliness of cancer for thousands of people with the most simple of gifts – a letter.

Your kind donations of letters, stamps, envelopes and money have made all this happen.

Thank you so very very much.
