BBC RADIO SUSSEX/SURREY - MY CANCER JOURNEY

To mark World Cancer Day, BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey are launching a week-long series from Monday 6 – Friday 10 February called “My Cancer Story”, raising awareness and supporting others through the sharing of stories.

My Cancer Story was formed as a legacy of our Community Heroes Awards and is being fronted by Amanda Jones and Nigel Lewis Baker MBE, two previous winners in the Outstanding Achievement category. Amanda has worked tirelessly for the charity Breast Cancer Now, following the untimely death of her daughter Becs from breast cancer at the age of 33. Nigel has terminal prostate cancer but has been relentless in his efforts to raise awareness of the condition and supporting others living with cancer and their families.

Campaign coverage kicks off on Monday morning, with the Breakfast Shows looking at the incredible research work taking place on our doorstep in Sussex and Surrey. Each morning they will then be looking at the impact that a cancer diagnosis can have on relationships, how to cope with financial hardship and dispelling some of the myths around cancer. From Me to You's Brian Greenley will be sharing a very personal account of dealing with his own diagnosis of bowel cancer.

During the week, listeners will be encouraged to share their stories too by calling in or using #MyCancerStory on social media.

For those looking for help and advice, they are also running two drop-in sessions, where people can find out more about the range of help and support available:

09:00 – 12:00 Wednesday 8 February - BBC Sussex, 40-42 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3XB

13:00 – 14:00: Thursday 9 February - Turnfit Gym and Fitness Studio, 1-2 Bridge Street, Guildford, GU1 4RY

Several leading charities have lent their support to this campaign, including Breast Cancer Now, Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Assistant Managing Editor Mark Carter commented: “I’m so pleased that we are able to bring listeners this very special week of programmes. Cancer directly or indirectly affects so many lives every year and I hope that the sharing of so many stories will be both informative and a source of inspiration for anyone going through a similar situation”.

Amanda Jones, who is fronting the campaign alongside Nigel Lewis Baker MBE added: "Nigel and I are very privileged to be fronting this week of innovative programmes from BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey. All of us will benefit from hearing this truly special, important and ground-breaking week of programmes. Both Nigel and I are extremely grateful to the BBC team, who have produced a series which fulfils everything local radio promises - keeping its listeners informed and leaving them assured of the positive progress occurring in the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and prostate cancer."
