Why Being a Trustee for From Me to You Means So Much to Me
What does a handwritten letter really mean? In this piece, our trustee Liz shares why being part of From Me to You matters so deeply to her, and how something as simple as a letter can bring comfort, connection, and kindness when it’s needed most.
I’ve always loved letters.
There’s something special about sitting down with a pen and paper, taking a moment to slow down, and writing to someone. In a world of quick messages and emails, a handwritten letter feels different. It feels intentional. Personal. Human.
That love of letter writing is one of the reasons becoming a trustee for From Me to Youmeans so much to me.
From Me to You is a charity built around a simple but powerful idea: sending handwritten letters to people living with cancer to help reduce isolation. A letter from a stranger might seem like a small thing, but when someone is going through treatment, spending long days at home, or navigating the emotional ups and downs of cancer, that small act of kindness can mean an enormous amount.
What I find most moving is hearing the stories from people who receive the letters. Sometimes they arrive on a difficult day. Sometimes during a long hospital stay. Sometimes at a moment when the house feels very quiet. And suddenly there’s a reminder that someone, somewhere, took the time to think of them.
It’s hard to describe how powerful that is.
As a trustee, I get to see the charity from behind the scenes - the people who carefully write their letters, the thought that goes into every envelope, and the community that has grown around this simple act of kindness. Each letter is small on its own, but together they create something much bigger: connection.
For me, being part of this charity brings together two things I care deeply about - kindness and communication. A letter carries warmth in a way few things do. It travels across distance and arrives as a small, tangible reminder that someone cares.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what someone needs most.
I’m incredibly proud to play a small part in helping From Me to You continue spreading that kindness, one letter at a time.
